Connor’s Story
Growing up in Cairns, Far North Queensland, sport has been a key component in my life for as long as I can remember. AFL has been my passion since I was 6 years old, and hence I have seen my fair share of Physiotherapists in my time.
As a young teenager I thought my body was invincible but as I grew older and the physical demands of elite sport increased, I discovered the bitter-sweet feeling of sitting with a Physiotherapist constructing a rehabilitation path back to playing sport.
I have spent a lot of time in Physiotherapy rooms and as I approached year 11, the question of what I want to study after school lingered over my head. Luckily for me, having experienced many fantastic Physios that rave about their day-to-day life – surrounded by high level athletes, I had no trouble deciding that someday I will become a Physiotherapist myself.
Deciding on a career choice was the easy part… over the next two years my ability to balance goals was tested. As I discovered the requirements to be offered a physiotherapist position at university, the requirements to play higher level footy also began to ramp up.
However, I am lucky enough to have always had unconditional support from family and friends. With the help of some friendly competition on the field and many late-night dinners, I was offered positions on the Gold Coast for both footy and university.
I moved down to Gold Coast a month after graduation to begin my AFL training and was grateful to learn from a range of sport specialists in the industry. Shortly after, I began studying physiotherapy at Griffith University where I soon discovered another increase in required study hours. We have studied a range of Physiotherapy areas thus far, yet I took a special interest in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, having personally experienced many of the injuries that were being taught. This brings me to how I came to be working at the front desk of Gold Coast Physio and Sports Health.
I had torn my hamstring mid-way through the footy season with minimal chance of returning so I shifted my focus to learning as much as I can about the Physiotherapy industry. Luckily for me, I called Gold Coast Physio and Sports Health and was recommended a great Physiotherapist by the name of Kyle Weise. As Kyle and I worked through my rehab program, we got to talking about getting more Physiotherapy experience and it just so happened that I was given the opportunity to shadow Kyle throughout the week.
After a few weeks of learning off Kyle, a job opportunity opened up in the front desk team in the clinic. After the excellent service they provided to me, I thought it was an amazing opportunity to join a great team and expand my knowledge in a different area of allied health practices.
