Massage and the Central Nervous System…

What is the central nervous system and how does massage affect it?

The central nervous system is made up of the brain (this controls how we think) and spinal cord (this controls messages between the brain and nerves throughout the body). The central nervous system receives, processes and responds to sensory information, for example, feeling pain. Massage strokes have been shown to reduce tension throughout the body by stimulating the receptors that transmit sensory signals to the central nervous system. This in turn reduces tension within the muscles and creates a feeling of relaxation.

Massage also causes the release of endorphins which has been shown to reduce pain and muscle tension, which of course, is what we as massage therapists would like to achieve for our clients. Massage can be a particularly powerful support for the nervous system and its health. Regular massage is a great way to bring calm to our bodies and “rebalance” our scales to support our parasympathetic nervous system. So the next time you wonder why a massage makes you feel so good and ready to face life again, it’s not just because it feels great but because your massage therapist has reduced your tension. With this said, we look forward to welcoming you in clinic for your next massage.
