What is the difference between an Australian Strength & Conditioning Association (ASCA)-accredited Coach & a Personal Trainer

In the Australian health and fitness landscape, both Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coaches and Personal Trainers (PTs) play important roles in improving physical performance and health outcomes. While there is some overlap in what they do, their scope, training focus, and typical client populations differ in meaningful ways.

A Strength & Conditioning Coach specialises in performance enhancement. Their work is grounded in exercise science principles such as biomechanics, load management, periodisation, and sport-specific programming. S&C Coaches are commonly involved with athletes or highly active individuals aiming to improve strength, power, speed, agility, and resilience to injury.

In Australia, many S&C Coaches hold tertiary qualifications in exercise & sport science or related fields and must be accredited and regulated under the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA). This peak body helps ensure standards and levels of training and proficiency in the Coaches.

An ACSA-accredited Coach can move through levels 1 to 3 in accreditation based on experience, skills and the level of athlete and sports organisation they work with (local club, state, national or international).

A Personal Trainer, on the other hand, focuses more broadly on general health, fitness, and lifestyle outcomes. PTs commonly work with clients aiming to improve body composition, cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and overall wellbeing. They are often found in commercial gyms, private studios, or delivering mobile services. In Australia, PTs usually hold a Certificate III and IV in Fitness and may be registered with organisations such as Fitness Australia or Physical Activity Australia.

S&C Coaches are better-suited for clients transitioning from rehabilitation to performance training, particularly where there is a need for structured progression and load monitoring.

In practice, the most effective outcomes come from collaboration of your Therapist and your S&C Coach to achieve your goals, safely, ethically and with long-term physical health in mind.
